Free boot camps are changing lives, six weeks at a time

In just over two years Brett Johnston, Peta Carmody and their team of trainers at Body Torque have transformed hundreds of bodies and mindsets. And what have they asked for in return? Not a cent. Just commitment.

“A big part of the boot camp is teaching healthy habits, which can get lost when people get so busy with work and family life” – Brett Johnston

After 10 years in the local fitness industry and wanting to give something back, Body Torque starting running free Community Health Clubs in March 2012 and its success has snowballed. Run in six-week blocks and always inundated with applicants, the Australian-first free boot camp is open to anyone who is in the overweight or obese BMI category and is determined to get themselves and their lives back on track.

Meeting half an hour each evening five days a week with an optional free circuit class on Saturday mornings, Brett and Peta have lost count of the number of cards and letters they have received from participants who have used the six-week courses as a catalyst for life-long change.

“A big part of the boot camp is teaching healthy habits, which can get lost when people get so busy with work and family life,” Brett tells. “A lot of people just simply don’t understand what’s involved in maintaining a healthy weight; for example, the calories in vs calories out equation, and adopting active strategies into your life outside of the gym… these seemingly small things make a big difference.”

While Peta says the collective successes from the participants has kept them going with the free program over the past two years, one of their biggest success stories was Kim Booth who started off in the Community Health Program at 117kg and a size 24, then stuck with the principles she learned to work her way down to 70kg and a size 12 over the course of the year.

“Kim’s amazing and has a whole new lease on life,” says Peta. Brett adds: “There are so many avenues that open up to people when they achieve their goals. They start to do things they never thought they could outside of training, like swapping that desk job for the career they always dreamed of. Losing weight gives people the confidence to achieve what they want to and it’s truly amazing to see and be part of that.”

What to expect

A training and nutrition plan, a daily commitment, lots of support and advice, but no excuses. Those who consistently don’t lose the expected 1kg a week will be held accountable. This is to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the experience.
