Bowen Tri Free Radicals

Bowen Triathlon 2014 Wrap-Up

Blowing in Bowen: Swim, ride and run like the wind!

Thanks to Graham Pemberton from Free Radicals Tri-be Family Triathlon Club for supplying this article.

The Bowen Triathlon is one event not to be missed in the Northern Series Triathlon Calendar. This picturesque, clear water course is one of the fastest around; even with the wind!

The triathletes from Townsville travelled south in their hordes, with over 50 Free Radicals members present and quite a few faces from the Townsville Triathlon Club in attendance. Teams from the NQ Coaching and Triathlon Supplies, Top Brand Cycles and Off N On Bikes also showed-up and put in some great performances.

With a moderate swell, the Men’s wave got underway first. It was always going to be a hard-fought race with current Bowen title-holder, Townsville’s Sam Murphy, fresh back from the Ironman World Championships in Kona and hitting out hard.

Chelsea & Sam

Female and Male winners – Chelsea Gerrard and Sam Murphy.

A brilliant swim from Richmond “Flash” Sense was the fastest of the day. He was out of the water and away, closely followed by Sam Murphy and Mackay’s Ryan Palanze, who has just turned Pro this season. The ladies wave started five minutes behind and was hotly contested, but Chelsea Gerrard took no prisoners through the entire race and blazed home for Top Brand Cycles in first place.

Helen Watson finishing strong

Heather Wilson finishing strong.

Sam was strong on the bike and took the lead, tracked all the way by Ryan. But Sam proved too strong for him on the run, taking out first place to retain his title.

The Free Radicals Tri-be dominated the field with podium slots in the majority of the Age Group categories.
