The fourth and final week of the 31 Days of Activity showed a huge diversity of activities that Goers could try for free – from swimming and SUP to trying triathlon and TYGA. Chatting to everyone at each event we have loved hearing about what three activities you have tried and salute you for stepping outside your comfort zone. It has been a huge month and we’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved – being the first time we have run this free community initiative we didn’t know what to expect and the response has blown us away.

Watch the video wrap-up here

If you took part and haven’t received a feedback survey to complete, please email [email protected]. We will put all respondents in the draw to win a $50 voucher from The Precinct Fresh Market.

Here is a wrap-up of each day of Week 4; but we’d just like to say a huge thank you to these businesses and clubs involved:

Pilates Studio Townsville | Peak Performance Swimming | Townsville Hockey | Captain Active | Townsville SUP Club | Courage Training Centre | Studio 7 Pilates | Body Torque Health & Fitness | Townsville Cycle Club | Free Radicals Family Tri Club | Latin Vibrations

Jan 23 -Xtend Barre

Pilates Studio Townsville’s hand weights and ballet barre were the weapons of choice in this class that fused dance, Pilates and sculpting exercises. This Xtend Barre session challenged attendees’ strength, plus helped to lengthen and stretch the body from top to bottom… and firm-up bottoms! (along with legs, arms and abs). Thanks to Lee Hodder for hosting this fantastic free class. If you missed out, mention TheGo this month or in February to receive a free trial pass.

Jan 24 – Swim-Based Fitness and Swimming Stroke Correction

It was all about developing swimming fitness and skills with Peak Performance Swimming hosting two sessions at Northern Beaches Leisure Centre. The first session was Swim-Based Fitness and – under champion swimmer Ahlanna Hayes’ instruction – attendees combined laps with everything from push-ups and squats to burpees and tricep dips. The following session was Swimming Stroke Correction, where swimmers of all abilities received practical tips and one-on-one coaching with Ahlanna filming technique and giving specific advice. Thanks to Peak Performance Swimming for hosting this free session.

Jan 25 – Hockey Obstacle Assault Course

Families had fun playing hockey-related games and challenges in this dynamic obstacle course. There were goal, passing, and weaving drills at Townsville Hockey Stadium that gave participants a good introduction to the multi-faceted sport. Thanks to Marc Pike and the Townsville Hockey Association for running this interactive session.

Jan 26 – Ross River Wet Games – Morning

Kids (and big kids) had the most fun you could possibly imagine with water on this clear Australia Day morning. The banks of Ross River played host to resident superhero Captain Active and about 40 laughing sidekicks as the Wet Games unfolded in watery wonderment. From putting ‘crocodile eggs’ into nests to playing number games with dripping consequences; tremendous fun was had by all on this hot Townsville day. Thanks to Captain Active for hosting this free activity.

Jan 26 – Stand Up Paddleboarding – Afternoon

A fleet of Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) travelling along Ross River was the perfect end to Australia Day. Touted as the fastest growing water sport in the world, this was the first time most Goers had set foot on a SUP but it didn’t take them long to find their balance and master the paddle strokes. There were very little cases of falling off (a couple of intentional plunges to cool off) and there were a host of different boards and paddles to try and compare rides and styles. Thanks to Daniel Rose and Townsville SUP Club for hosting this free activity. https://thegotownsville.com.au/2014/09/whats-sup-townsvilles-stand-paddling-revolution/

Jan 27 – Combat Cross Training

Mixing strength and cardio training, Goers did everything from burpees to clean and presses as the sun came-up. This Combat Cross Training session is designed to continually improve fitness and body composition to have attendees in combat-ready shape physically and mentally – it certainly pushed the limits! Thanks to the Courage Training Centre and Aden Hawke for hosting this free session.

Jan 28 – Intro to Pilates

It was all about strengthening the core as ladies and men were introduced to Pilates. Megan and her mum Pam from Studio 7 Pilates demonstrated a range of strengthening and toning exercises, including how to use the Pilates circle, while they circulated the room at Castle Hill PCYC correcting technique. Thanks to the ladies for hosting this free class as part of the 31 Days of Activity.

Jan 29 – Cardio Kickboxing

Kickboxing pads got thumped as Goers’ heart rates soared in this calorie-burning class. The group fitness area at Body Torque Health and fitness was filled with bodies punching, kicking and planking as the Cardio Kickboxing Class worked everyone into a decent sweat. Thanks to Nick and Body Torque for hosting this free class.

Jan 30 – Come Try Track Cycling

While Goers were ready to hit the velodrome, the weather had different plans with a storm rolling in just before it was time to start causing a wash-out. Thankfully, the Townsville Cycle Club rescheduled the event to this week with one Goer reporting back afterwards: “It was really good on the track – a bit spooky with no brakes and you couldn’t stop pedalling!” For more information about track cycling and the Townsville Cycle Club see here: http://www.townsville.cycling.org.au/

Jan 31 – Family Triathlon Taster – Morning

The swim, bike and run legs of triathlon were broken down into manageable stages with plenty of tips, tricks and encouragement offered in the morning of the final day. Staged at the Northern Beaches Leisure Centre, the Free Radicals Family Triathlon Club split the group into three where each sub-group was assigned to a specific station to learn some informative inside info about each individual triathlon discipline from one of the club’s experts. This culminated in all Goers putting their new knowledge into practise and completing a mini tri, with plenty of smiles as they came through the big inflatable arches to finish. Thanks to Graham and Pam Pemberton, Brendan Cochrane and Simon James for hosting this fantastic and fun session.

Jan 31 – Latin Vibrations Open Day – Afternoon

Goers got to feast on a buffet of different dance styles in the final exciting event of the 31 Days of Activity. Latin Vibrations opened the doors to its West End studio to showcase everything from Street Salsa and Belly Dancing to Ballroom and Cabaret. Budding new dancers were not afraid to bust the moves and Latin Vibrations’ various instructors were blown away by the turnout and enthusiasm. Thanks to Jodie Coey and all other talented LV instructors for hosting this free four hours of fabulousness.

Find out what happened in Week 1, Week 2 and Week 3 of the 31 Days of Activity.
