Activity in a nutshell
Experience what it is like to skim across the water without a motor. Expect to get wet, be challenged, and have fun! You won’t be an expert after this brief two-to-three-hour session, but you’ll know the basics and whether you’ll want to get started in sailing.
What’s great about it?
This is dinghy sailing so you will be in small one or two person boats out on the water of Cleveland Bay. The session will include an explanation of how to rig the boat, how to launch and retrieve the boat and how to tack and gybe. These few tasks are the basics of getting started in sailing. The experience will be held in the morning so the light breezes will be kind to beginners. You will get to be skipper or crew on the boat and learn how to steer using a rudder, as well as learn how to trim your sails so you can speed up or slow down.
Who’s it best for?
Anyone keen to get on the water and have a go. The minimum age for kids is eight.
Anything else to know?
You need to feel confident in and on the water in case of capsize. Also, the Townsville Sailing Club is a volunteer-run organisation so your participation in preparing the boats for sailing and putting them away afterwards is essential. Plus doing this helps you to learn what to do for when you come back for the Start Sailing program.
