Due to parking restrictions at the Paluma Dam we have had to put extra measures in place to get everyone to the start line of the 6km and 14km event.
There are considerable parking restrictions at Paluma Dam so it is imperative that you read all communications and follow the directions of parking marshals on the day. As there is limited numbers of car spaces available we strongly recommend you car pool where possible. There will also be a shuttle bus available for people to park in the Paluma township and take the shuttle bus to the event start line. When you register for the event, you will be required to indicate if you are camping (camping spaces are limited spaces and includes a car park), car pooling, or will be utilising the shuttle bus.
Travel and camping
OL has booked all of the camp sites at the Paluma Dam for the Friday and Saturday night. if you wish to camp you need to purchase a camp site when you register for your race on our Eventbrite rego system. Please send us an email to request your camp site (see map below). Please note we may not be able to allocate you your preferred site but will do our best to meet your camping requirements.
As we are only allowed a small number of cars at the Dam you must book and pay for a car spot at the Dam when you enter the 6km or 14km event. Where possible, please car pool, and feel free to use our Facebook page or contact us to offer or find a spare seat in a car.
When you book the 6km or 14km event and you want to tak the bus FROM PALUMA VILLAGE TO PALUMA DAM you must book and pay for your seat/s. This includes for family and friends not running in the event but coming along as supporters. The bus will run at 7am and 8am.
This will get you there with plenty of time before you start and the bus will also return you back to Paluma Village when you finish. First bus back to Paluma Village should depart the Dam around 12.30pm.
For 25km runners you need to book the bus when you register if you need to take the bus back to your car at the Paluma Village.
What do I need to bring?
Due to the remote nature of the location Outer Limits have appropriate safety mechanisms in place, including requiring each runner to carry mandatory safety equipment. The following mandatory equipment must be taken by all competitors:
- 2x compression bandages
- mobile phone (make sure you’ve got the battery fully charged). There are places on the course where you get reception.
- emergency/space blanket (these can be purchased for around $6 at your local pharmacy)
- your race number (pins will be provided to affix it to your shirt, or bring a race number belt)
There will be mandatory gear checks when you sign in. You must be carrying these items in order to participate in the run.
Your safety is our priority.
For the Ultra and Long course runners, we will provide a bag drop service and transport your bag to the finish line. Please ensure your bag is clearly marked with your name. We recommend the use of Moxie gear Gaiters; however it is not essential to wear gaiters for this course. Please see the link and send us an email if you are interested in purchasing a pair.
Signing in and signing out
Before you commence the race you are required to sign in. When you finish the race you must sign out – the sign out sheet will be located at the time-keeping desk. It is very important that you sign out when you complete the race. If you don’t sign out we will assume you are missing and take appropriate action (this involves authorities and search and rescue operations, you may bear the cost of this if you haven’t followed race protocols).
Paluma is part of the wet tropics area and so it is wet most of the year. The course is very technical with mossy rocks and slippery tree roots. You will encounter tricky creek crossings and trees over the track. You may also find a few leeches on the course, and maybe a snake or two (they’re pretty friendly). For more information on the area please visit the National Parks website.
If you are not comfortable in the bush it is suggested to run with a buddy. These trails are very remote deep in the rainforest. We will do our best to have as many marshals on the course as possible and it will be well marked. It is always safer to run with someone, however it is not mandatory and in the short and intermediate courses there should be plenty of other runners around you. The long course it pretty adventurous and being a point to point race a buddy might be a good idea.
Due to the technicality of the course it will take considerably longer than you would run the same distance on the road, so ensure you take adequate food and water to cover you for the duration you expect.
Outer Limits will have some nutrition available for purchase at the event (short and intermediate courses only), this includes, Gels, Energy Cookies and Electrolytes. The only water on the course is from natural running sources, so take appropriate purification means, drink the water at your own risk (Sam does) or carry sufficient for the entire course. A map of the course will be available for viewing at the start of each event.
Individual maps will not be required on the course as there will be plenty of markings and marshals on the course. Elevation profile pictures are available…scroll down.
There are toilets at all start locations and the finish. The trail network is part of Paluma National Park, Townsville Council’s Water Catchment Area and private property. We expect everyone to take care of the park and facilities, ensuring no rubbish is left out on the course in order for us to continue our good relationship with the Council and Parks and Wildlife. The Park will also be open to campers and day users, please be mindful and courteous of other users at all times.
A bbq lunch will be provided at the end of the race for race participants. People not participating in the race can purchase lunch for $5 online on the website.
Outer Limits has booked out all of the camp areas for the weekend, including the group camping area. Please book this online andinform us of your preference of camp site so we can allocate accordingly. The picture below does not indicate current bookings so please send us en email.
