With upgrades, new equipment and an overall redesign to appeal to more than your average gym-goer, JCU Gym is relaunching its updated facility this weekend and taking things up a notch. We caught up with manager Tim Keating to get the latest. Head along on Saturday to try the free classes and nutritional talks and check things out for yourself.
What do the new upgrades include? We have a new layout that’s more free flowing and spacious. We also have brand new cardio equipment – over 30 pieces of Precor state-of-the-art machinery; plus a six-station Alphafit rig – this is designed for CrossFitters, functional movement specialists or just about anyone who needs a chin-up rack or lifting cell. It comes with six individual cells to workout on at the same time as five other people. There are also 750kg of new bumper plates to go with six new barbells.
“Being the training headquarters for the 2015 WNBL champions, the Townsville Fire, we can now offer a better facility for them to train in”
Why the changes? Our facility needed an upgrade and an upgrade it got! The fitness industry is dynamic and ever changing and – as a result – we had to diversify to suit the consumer’s needs. This new fit-out appeals to more than your average gym goer: We now cater for athletes of all kinds. Being the training headquarters for the 2015 WNBL champions, the Townsville Fire, we can now offer a better facility for them to train in.
How are you different to other gyms? We offer diversity – there are 30 group fitness classes a week, our weekly 5km Friday fun run; bootcamp, our functional training facilities, and spin room; plus our prices are some of the most competitive around. Being a not-for profit organisation, we are a unique community that invests all of our profits back into making our facilities better for our members.
Who would benefit the most from your facility? Most people think that we are only open to university students, but this could not be further from the truth: We welcome absolutely everybody.
What do you have organised for the open day? Doors open at 8am, there will be free classes, free Gym Food Australia taste-testing, free nutritional seminar with personal trainer Skotty J, gym memberships for $9.95 a week (no joining fee), and all supplements will be at cost price all day. More information in our calendar here.
