Kayaking for Over Fifties

Frustrated by the lack of fitness options tailored for over fifties, River-sea Kayaking’s Hans Preuss has developed a specific program for older Townsvillians who want a low impact, fun source of exercise that also offers a social side.

“There are so many activities for under forties in Townsville, but the over fifties are a group that’s been a bit neglected; especially for people who are sedentary and want to get moving, but aren’t keen on the gym or have niggles like sore knees,” tells Hans, who – now 62 – has been kayaking since the age of 16. “It’s the first-time we’ve offered this style of training, which is over 13 weeks and is about getting fit without being smashed into the ground.”

Hans says kayaking is a great choice for those aged 50+ as it’s low impact on the joints, strengthens the core and offers some cardio while being in the serenity of the outdoors.

“It’s also about meeting other people with shared interests and building that camaraderie,” tells Hans, with the sessions small enough that he can give individual instruction. “It’s all about fun and fitness and people who’ve never kayaked before are more than welcome to join in.”

In the first week of the 13-week program, technique will be the focus with Hans saying it’s important to build a special understanding of your boat.

“Although it sounds strange; you need to build a rapport with your craft and work out how it feels and moves through the water,” he says.

All equipment – including kayaks and paddles – is supplied; but you can also bring your own should you choose to.

The Fun ‘N’ Fitness for Over 50s sessions will be held every Saturday from January 17, 2024 at Loam Island from 7.45am-8.45am.

For more details, see the Events Calendar. Bookings are essential and close Friday, January 9.

Psst: Not over 50 but would love to get into kayaking? You may be interested in the Fun ‘N’ Fitness class which is designed for those who want to embrace competitive racing (no prior experience required).

Hans’ top three kayaking tips

  • Relax in the boat
  • Do soft strokes – people always make the mistake of going too hard
  • Make mistakes – you’ll learn faster
